Rogaland

 ITRACT pilots in Rogaland.

The 4 defined pilots are based on 3 apps developed by Kolumbus and the “bus on demand” functionality. The last is not realized in this region as app. The goal of the pilots is to find 1) how app functionality and usability are received, 2) possible future improvements of the apps, and 3) if this communication technology increases the use of public transportation and user satisfaction of the public transport.

The pilots were tested by usage information from Kolumbus and three surveys. The first survey in August 2013 focused on university students and some employees. The second survey focused on university students in June 2014, and the last survey in October 2014 included users of public transport in general with employed people in majority of respondents. The planner and real-time apps in public use were introduced in 2012 and 2013 before the first survey, and the ticketing app was introduced in September 2013.

The general feedback on use is that the usage of the apps is steady growing to 57000 update clicks of the real-time app per day. Pilot 1 the planner app and pilot 3 the ticketing app are more popular with less frequent travellers. For the last one this was due to ability to only purchase single ticket when the survey was conducted. This is now changed. The pilot 2, the real-time app is more popular with frequent users of public transport. The pilot 4, the bus on demand functionality (which do not exist as app) is regarded as a good future functionality, more from users in rural areas than urban. Probably because the rural area users see this as an improvement versus low frequent busses outside of rush hours. In fact a high percentage of our respondents in all the surveys can be seen as users with at least one destination in a rural area. And the best feedback is the high and rising use of the apps combined with user statements that they appreciate the improved information and functionality. And, that they state that they expect to use public transport more due to this communication technology.

Report from the June 2014 ITRACT wp5 survey in Rogaland.

Apps in public use in Rogaland for improving the ease-of-use for people utilizing public transport. These apps are Real time bus information, Travel Scheduler, and Flexible payment apps.  These apps will be tested in ITRACT pilots in 2014, and as far as possible compared with apps developed by ITRACT partners.

Link to the local bus company Kolumbus that develops APPS

Local partners are the Rogaland County Traffic Office (which includes the bus company Kolumbus) and University of Stavanger.

There are parallel development of APPS  regarding Rogaland:  Kolumbus has development project started out separat from ITRACT, and we have the ITRACT app developments.  The partners in Rogaland intend to make as much out of theis as possible, so ITRACT will implement and test these two development efforts in comparison. And further we intend to implemt and test "bus on demand" for rural routes in evenings.

Kolumbus develops its apps in collaboration with Google as first Norwegian google transportapp partner. In April 2013 Google also made agreement with Norwegian rail which means that the railroad planning is linked to the publictransportation planning in Rogaland.
